History and Culture Project

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Libraries, in partnership with the Virgin Islands Division of Libraries, Archives & Museums (DLAM) was awarded a National Leadership grant for digitization from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in 2000. The Project seeks to enhance access to sources of information on Virgin Islands' history and culture for scholars, students, historians, and researchers in the territory and abroad. The award was given for the purpose of digitizing U. S. Virgin Islands' materials in areas of biography, education, history and culture for access on the World Wide Web. Materials were drawn from the libraries' collections. The documents include:

  • Funeral (memorial) Booklets: these are programs of the religious and grave-side ceremonies commemorating the life of the deceased. The collection is important for it's genealogical record, biographical accounts, and stories, many recorded only in these materials.
  • Project Introspection: materials developed by the Virgin Islands Department of Education to document and explain history and customs of Virgin Islanders. These items are used in the public school curriculum in the Virgin Islands. The collection includes the popular Profiles of Outstanding Virgin Islanders which is considered the most comprehensive source for biographical information on political and civic leaders in the territory.
  • Research Reports: research reports and occasional papers published by the University of the Virgin Islands and the Division of Libraries Archives and Museums. Topics range from the humanities to the sciences.
  • Newspaper Commentaries: articles on critical environmental issues including identification of reference sources housed within government agency and other departmental collections.
  • Historical photographs: documenting events in political and social life of Virgin Islanders.
  • Maps: dating from 1700s to the present
  • Government Documents: reports generated by government agencies.
